OUR HISTORY
CBOA IS WIDELY RECOGNISED AS THE VOICE OF THE INDUSTRY.
Established in 1990 to further develop freight traffic on the UK’s inland waterways, the Commercial Boat Operators Association committee completes a host of activities for the benefits of its members.
Committee members are elected for four years and elects its officers – the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer.
Membership is divided between trade members and associates who support the CBOA’s objectives. Voting is on the basis of one member, one vote.
Since its formation, the CBOA has made representations to the UK Government, local governments, and navigation authorities.
During this time, the CBOA has:
- Represented on the MCA vessel standards and Boatmaster groups, Canal & River Trust and other navigation authority licensing, stoppages, dredging and safety standards groups and advising on operational matters generally.
- Carried out feasibility studies into potential movements
- Represented on User Group forums
- Co-operated with other waterway and freight interest groups
- Successfully pressed the case for re-instatement of gate paddles on the Grand Union Canal
- Arranged trial movements and demonstration loads
- Attended trade events
- Supported the Canal & River Trust in its efforts to promote freight on its waterways and the planned Port of Leeds
Some of the authorities we work with
CBOA also has links to Freight by Water (part of the Freight Transport Association), the Parliamentary Waterways Group, the CRT National Users Forum and its Navigation Advisory Group, Yorkshire and North East Regional Advisory Board, and the Freight Steering Group.
The CBOA makes representations to Parliamentary Select Committees relating to transport and also the environment. It holds meetings with shadow ministers of political parties.
